Andrew and Anna Tumilty receive their cheque for £5,500 from Norbreck Genetics' Philip Halhead

Third time lucky - Lancashire scholarships worth £1,000s up for grabs

For the third successive year, young Lancashire farmers and horticulturalists are being offered the chance to study abroad thanks to £1,000s of funding. The scholarship was set up Lancaster and Morecambe Agriculture and Horticultural Society Trustees in 2009 and to date has awarded £12,500.

The 2012 scholarship is now launched  and is open to anyone living in Lancashire and local area. It aims to encourage young farmers, horticulturalists and people involved in agriculture to study or develop their business ideas abroad. Looking for entries from candidates with entrepreneurial flair, this scholarship fund offers up to £5000 individual support.

The scholarship was set up to make use of funds released when the Lancaster and Morecambe Show ceased and the sale of the showground created a fund that the committee wanted to put to good use. Society member Philip Halhead from Norbreck Genetics proposed the Travel Scholarship, highlighting how much benefit his own agricultural business had gained from global travel.

This year’s special launch event takes place at Myerscough College on Wednesday 18th January 7pm and includes presentations from 2011 winners Geraldine Todd, student at Myerscough and a brother and sister business partnership Andrew and Anna Tumilty. The pair, who produce versatile Eco-friendly Flower Pouches made from bio-degradable Jute were awarded £5,500 to allow them to travel to Canada, the USA and Holland.

Andrew and Anna said “The scholarship win came at exactly the right time. It means we can develop our business much quicker. Without it, I don’t think we would be able to travel for our research for another few years.

The judging panel included Craig Thompson, Myerscough College’s Learning Manager for Agriculture as well as two trustees from Lancaster and Morecambe Agriculture and Horticultural Society Trustees and Philip Halhead from Norbreck Genetics who said “Those who have already won scholarships showed real entrepreneurial sprit and launching this years scholarship at Myerscough College is a fantastic way to create awareness of this opportunity.”

Craig Thompson said “It is a great legacy for the Lancaster and Morecambe Agriculture and Horticultural Society and we look forward to welcoming a new group of young entrepreneurs to the launch on January 18th at 7pm  to find out more.” Entries for the 2012 scholarship close Friday 12th February 2012.  For more information about the scholarship, click here or contact Philip Halhead at Norbreck Genetics on 07949 733 747.
