Empire D'Ochain calves win 2 consecutive Club calf show Championships

October is certainly the month for British Blue club calf shows. Last week the North East Club held their calf show and later, the weekend saw the Wales and Borders Club holding theirs. Both clubs had something in common - their Champions were both by Empire D'Ochain

Wales & Borders British Blue Club Calf Show

It was a particularly pleasing day for Philip Halhead who judged the calf show as his champion and reserve were both by sires in his Norbreck Genetics stud. This is what Philip had to say about the show:

"The drive from Lancashire to Newcastle Emlyn in South Wales was a long one but extremely worth while. A strong show of 26 calves were forward in four classes with nine breeders exhibiting. The older bull and females classes were very strongly represented and the quality was first class.

"Good mobility combined with very good muscling went from the top to the bottom of each class"

The judging revolved around the finer points of the breed with particular emphasis placed on style and presentation of the animals to find the winners. Philip gave his reasons to the exhibitors and crowd after each class so they knew exactly why each animal was placed in its particular position.

" Every judge should give reasons, however brief, to explain to fellow breeders why they placed animals in a particular position. Its simply not good enough to place animals then walk away from the ring leaving exhibitors and bystanders wondering why a judge has put animals in a certain position"

The show was a double whammy when the Overall champion  was an EMPIRE D'OCHAIN heifer and the Reserve Champion was a BRINGLEE VOLKAWAGON heifer.

Championship winner was Betws Donna, an Empire D'Ochain daughter from: Mr Rhys & Gill Bellis, Llandysul, Ceredigion.

Reserve Champion ticket went to Dragon Blues Dilys, a daughter of Bringlee Volkawagon from Mr Geraint & Kim Williams, Lampeter, Ceredigion.

Leading the Championship was a lovely heifer from Johm Mawer, Spilsby, Lincolnshire. Sired by Empire D'Ochian she is one of the first of his progeny to hit the show ring - we wish her continued success.
